Professional Development Bureau. Each course is listed with a brief
description of the course content and objectives.

BASIC INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT
This 40 hour course is
designed to give participants a working knowledge of adult learning theory,
basic education theory, and various instructor tools that will help them
become proficient instructors within their chosen field. Participants will
learn how to write performance objectives and lesson plans. They will also
learn about adult learning, and how to choose appropriate instructional
strategies and instructional tools.
ETHICAL
USE OF FORCE
This 8 hour course
provides a comprehensive overview of legal and tactical issues related to
the use of force. Ethical issues related to the use of force are explored
through scenarios which focus on ethics in law enforcement, case decisions,
and legal implications related to peace officers’ use of force as well as
liability aspects of the use of electronic and projectile weapons.
POLICY
FORMULATION SELF STUDY
This course is designed to
give participants a basic overview of policy formulation including
pre-writing activities, post-writing activities, and legal issues. This
class will satisfy the Policy Formulation requirement of the Management
Certificate as stated in NAC 289.260.

FIRST-LINE SUPERVISORY
This is a two week program totaling 80 hours. This course is designed for
the sworn law enforcement professional who has just been promoted to the
supervisory rank within the last 12 months. This course is also for any
sworn law enforcement officer who is in a first-line supervisory position (FTCO,
etc.), or peace officer who is desirous of being promoted within an agency. A
recommendation from the agency administrator is required prior to class
enrollment.

All Students will
be required to pass a written examination for course completion.
Intermediate Instructor Development
This
40-hour course is the second level of instructor development. The pre-requisite for
this course is a 40-hour basic instructor development certification. This
course consist of 40-hour classroom that will review adult learning theories,
instructional design, icebreakers/energizers, generation gaps in training,
motivating students, liability, and teaching effectiveness. This class is
designed to certify participants as intermediate instructors. Within 6 months
of completing the class, students are required to plan and conduct a 40-hour
Basic Instructor Development course that will be audited by P.O.S.T. in order to
receive their intermediate certification.
Management
Effective 12/16/10, the P.O.S.T.
Commission adopted regulations that established requirements to obtain the
Management Certificate. The POST management program is a 200-hour program, made
up of five modules, that meets the training requirements of NAC 289.260 for the
Management Certificate. You must complete all areas (Module 1-5) with a score of
80% or better for course completion. Management Modules 1, 3, 4, and 5 can be
completed at any time and in any order. Management Module 2 must be completed
after completion of Management Module 1 (80-hour classroom).
