Answer: If you are employed with a
law enforcement agency, contact your
agency’s Single Point of Contact.
They will request an application
packet from the POST Basic Training
Bureau.

Answer: If you are employed with a
law enforcement agency, contact your
Single Point of Contact within your
agency and they will make all the
arrangements. If you are not
affiliated with an agency, contact
that academy directly to find out

POST.

certified basic academy as a
non-affiliated student, how do I
apply for my POST Basic Certificate?
Answer: You are not eligible to
receive your Basic Certificate until
you are employed as a peace
officer. Once employed, the
employing agency makes application
for your POST Basic Certificate.

I recently left employment as a
Nevada peace officer, how long is my
POST Basic Certificate valid?
Answer: Your Basic certificate is
placed on inactive status for up to
60 months. After 60 months it is
place on expired status. You may
re-enter law enforcement at any time
during the 60 months and the
certificate is placed back on active
status. After 60 months you must go
through a basic academy again.

RECIPROCITY CERTIFICATION
|
|

What are the eligibility
requirements for reciprocity
certification in Nevada?
Answer: Eligibility requirements
1. You come from a
reciprocity state or approved
federal program as an equivalent to
a Nevada Category I peace officer
(jail and prisons generally don't
qualify unless there is no
difference in the certification)
2. Your Basic certification
or license has never been suspended
or revoked
3. Less than 60 months has
lapsed since leaving the reciprocity
state as a peace officer and being
hired as a Nevada peace officer
(Category I or II)
4. Pass the state physical
fitness test battery within 16 weeks
of your date of hire as a Nevada
peace officer.
5.
You successfully complete the 80
hour In-Lieu/On-Line Reciprocity certification training
program.
6. Pass the written state
certification examination within 24
months of completion of the on-line
reciprocity training program.
Even if you qualify for
reciprocity, your employing agency
may require you to attend a full 16
week Basic Academy instead of the
In-Lieu. Once all these
requirements are fulfilled, your
employing Nevada criminal justice
agency can apply for your Basic
Certificate.

Can a non-affiliate academy graduate
from an approved reciprocity state
qualify for the reciprocity
certification?
Answer: No, the reciprocity program
is for officers who are already
certified and have experience.

(Nevada Category III)?
Answer: There is no reciprocity for
Corrections.
|

Can I challenge the certification
examination without attending
training and get a POST Basic
Certificate?
Answer: No, there is no challenge
process. You have to either be
eligible for reciprocity or attend a
full service Basic Academy.

Can a Reserve Officer from a
reciprocity state qualify for the
reciprocity certification in Nevada?
Answer: Generally no unless that
states standard is the same for
Reserve and regular full time
officers.

Does Nevada POST grant transferable
reciprocity certification for

another state?
Answer: No, however the training
that was used to attain those
certificates may be used for the
Nevada Professional Certificates if

Is a criminal record an immediate

Answer: It can be depending on
the crime. Felonies or crimes
that would be a felony if committed

Answer: There is no provision in
Nevada to upgrade from a Category
III to any other category.

upgrade my Category II POST Basic
Certificate to a Category I POST
Basic Certificate?
Answer: Pursuant to
NAC 289.200
there is a training program for
upgrading from a Category II to a
Category I. You would have to
complete this program which is
generally provided by a basic
training provider.

What is the process for me to
upgrade my POST Reserve Certificate
to any other category basic
certificate?
Answer: There is no upgrade
provision for a Reserve
Certificate. You would have to
attend a regular Category I, II or
III basic academy. |
