BASIC TRAINING BUREAU
POST ACADEMY

Mission Statement

To develop and deliver professional training, ensuring that all peace officers and
their agencies comply with established statutes and regulations
.

The Basic Training Bureau has the responsibility to train Category I and Category II peace officers, along with the development of curriculum for all basic training academies in Nevada.  Category I peace officers attend a 16 week residential academy and category II officers attend a 10 week training; which takes place concurrently for the first 10 weeks of the academy.  A Category III basic is also available.

The POST Basic Training Bureau conducts the only residential academy in the state; which promotes an enhanced learning process, team orientation, and the formation of long lasting friendships. A spouse orientation is held on the first day of the academy; which acquaints the cadet’s family with the rigors of the training and familiarizes them with the living and learning environment.

Cadets must maintain an 80% or better overall academic average and all cadets must pass the POST Physical Fitness Tests (PPFT) to graduate.  The hours of  classroom training experienced by the cadets includes such topics as court security, counter-terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, and numerous sessions of scenario based training.  Each cadet is administered three PPFTs; one at the start of the academy, at mid-term, and at the end of the academy.  Upon graduation, an overall fitness award is presented based on the results of the last two PPFTs.  In addition to the physical fitness training, a boxing program and instructor certification for boxing is delivered two times a year in conjunction with the basic academy.  All cadets participate in the basic boxing program as part of their physical fitness improvement program.
